Slow file copy in Vista (VERY VERY slow in fact)

Hi,

My new Vista machine seems to take AGES to copy files to network drives.
For example, copying a single 10mb file has so far taken several minutes
and it hasn't even actually started the copy yet - it still says
"Calculating..."

Windows XP can copy the file in about 4 seconds.

I've disabled Remote Differential Copy.
I've disabled TCP receive window scaling.
I've updated my network card drivers.

If I can't fix in the next couple of days then I'm going to have to give
up and go back to XP.

I'm using a Dell Dimension 9200 with an Intel 82566DC under Vista Business.

Two knowledge base articles mention hotfix packs which sound like they
address this problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938194
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938979

....but when I try and install them, they just say "this update does not
apply to your system". Why not? There's nothing about those hotfixes
which says they only apply to certain systems or hardware and many
people have said that they fix the problem. So why can't I install them?

I've also tried other file copy utilities such as the command prompt and
RoboCopy. Whatever I do, it's still just as slow.

PLEASE can anybody tell me any other things I can try to fix this.

Thanks,

Nick...

There are separate versions for 32-bit and 64-bit. Make sure you're using
the correct one.

As far as I know, I'm just using normal 32bit that came with the PC. I
doubt they'd ship it with 64bit installed? Not sure how I'd check
though... 64 isn't mentioned anywhere in computer properties.

For my Dell 9200 the fix was to get rid of the McAfee firewall which
came preinstalled and that was uninstall not disable.
The slow copies occurred with push copies from Vista Home Premium to a
NAS drive and to XP.
Of course this may not apply in your case :-)

This is a KNOWN issue the fanboy crowd goes nuts over anytime anybody
brings it up, especially the idiot Frank. If you're getting the run
around from Microsoft and can't gain access to the hotfix there are
several web sites that offer the SAME hotfixes without hassle. Do a
Google for the KB number and you'll probably find it, I don't have it
handy right now. The problem is as yet it isn't totally fixed. I too
have it. Microsoft admits and confirms it is a real problem. Frank is
in his usual denial mode.

Another thing you can do in addition to the hot fixes and other
changes mentioned already is take ownership of all your hard drives.
This often helps some.
