When using Windows Explorer, I am experiencing long delays when I click on
the "Local Disk C" branch of "My Computer". It used to take a few seconds and
now can take many minutes. It happened over a short period of time but I
cannot identify exactly what programmes were installed in the meantime. I
have all the usual Security systems installed

What operating system?
What is "all the usual security systems"? I bet my list differs. ;-)

How much hard disk drive space total?
Free space on the C drive?
Free space on other partitions (if they exist)?

What processor do you have (make/speed/number of cores?)
How much physical memory (RAM) do you have?

Have you ever ran "MalwareBytes" on your computer? (I suggest doing so.)

How does your problem pertain to Windows Update?

Because it only happened after a recent Windows update

<pulling teeth> You might have said that in your first post. Now tell us
other missing information:

State your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1).

What Windows Update(s) was/were installed recently? (Look in Install
Updates or WindowsUpdate.log; If WinXP, look in Update History at Windows
Update website.)

I've sorted it by reinstalling Service pack 3
