Hi all,

I've got a client with a central office with a SBS 2003 R2 box. This client
also has a remote branch office with 2 users who RWW into their PC's located
at the main office. Mostly, this is working fine, however, if they try to
open a large PDF (5MB +) from a share on the SBS box, this sometimes takes
over 10 minutes to open and occasionally causes the local PC to freeze. Is
there any way to speed this up ? I am currently limited to 1 MB upload speed
at each site at the moment. TIA.

Regards Colin.

Hi Colin,

+ Does the same pdf also open slowly when someone logs into workstation
locally?
+ What version of Acrobat Reader is on the workstation? (I'm assuming
you're using Acrobat for pdf viewing). If Acrobat, update to the latest
version.
+ If the user downloads the pdf file to their workstation desktop at the
office, does the desktop copy of the file still open slowly?
+ Make sure your antivirus on the server and the workstation are not set to
scan network files when they open.

Hi Merv,

Thanks for the reply.
If I log on to the workstation locally, the PDF opens fine, no latency.
All PC's are using the very latest version of Adobe Reader.
If the file is copied to the remote PC, it opens fine, no latency.
I haven't checked the AV yet (Trend WFBS 6.x) but will soon.

Regards Colin.

In the past, I've seen reports that Adobe has problems with Terminal
Services. Not sure this if still applies to the latest releases of Acrobat.

You may want to try something like NitroPDF or Foxit Reader (free pdf
viewers) to see if that helps.

NitroPDF reader
http://www.nitroreader.com/

Foxit viewer
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/

Also, try opening a 5MB Word or Excel file remotely to see if they also open
slowly.

Hi Merv,

I believe the client also has issues when opening high res images. I'll try
the Foxit reader suggestion though as this is the main problem. I'll also ask
the client to create/open a large Word/Excel file as suggested. Many thanks
for your help.

Regards Colin.

Hi Res images are not going to do well over Terminal Services. TS (RDP)
doesn't handle graphics intensive files well.

Hi Merv,

Thanks for that. Looks like I may need to find an alternative way for this
client to work.

Regards Colin.

Try clearing the cache files from Adobe - we found that after opening
hundreds of files that loading any would be very slow - the problem was
that adobe will cache parts of PDF's to make their loading faster, and
the files are not deleted properly in many cases.

Terminal Server is not a good idea for graphics and animation, such as
video or live GPS map tracking of company vehicles - the screen redraws
take to much bandwidth.

Problems viewing PDFs is a very common issue when using RDP. I recommend you look at Ericom Blaze, a software product that accelerates AND compresses standard Microsoft RDP, so it speeds RDP while conserving bandwidth. Blaze accelerates RDP performance by as much as 10-25 times, and helps deliver higher frame rates and reduce screen freezes and choppiness.

You can read more about Blaze and download a free evaluation at:
http://www.ericom.com/ericom_blaze.asp?URL_ID=708

Or view a video demo at:
http://www.ericom.com/blaze_youtube.asp?URL_ID=708

Hope this helps.
