Slow to respond then crashes

Im using the newest version of messenger 8.0.0812 and if the internet is
connected i can type in everything no problems, but when it is connected the
messenger starts hanling if i try to type in my username. if i do manage to
get it in if i try and connect i get error message 80048883. i have searched
and try most things to no avail. i am running xp sp1 because i dont like sp2
could this be the problem?

Windows 2000, Windows XP & Windows 2003 ONLY

Start/Run
Type "gpedit.msc" ENTER
Click + by Computer Configuration
Click + by Windows Settings
Click + by Security Settings
Click + by Software Restriction Policies
Click + by Trusted Publishers
For "Allow the following users to select trusted
publishers," the default is "End users."
If you do not have this at all, this does not apply.
This is typically the activeX error or the 0x800b0004
