For the past two weeks on Fridays (only as far as I can tell) we have seen
unacceptable Windows Update performance. The speed is extremely slow and
commonly it will attempt to download the updates and fail. The download
progress bar shows progress but the byte count doesn't increase at all. We
initially thought it was the client but after testing multiple systems it is
repeatable.

Has anyone else experienced similar performance issues? It seems come
Monday things are back to usual and we can install the updates sucessfully
without any degredation in performance. Any info on this (especially if you
work at Microsoft :-) would be spectacular.

Thanks!

Curious --- if you are using SUS ?
If so, see & post to that group at microsoft.public.softwareupdatesvcs

Hi Maurice & crew,

No SUS - simply using the windows update shortcut off the start menu. This
has happened the past three Friday's in a row for us.

Thanks!

Try visiting the site at off hours, or on different days. And if you keep up with critical updates (and I'd suggest using Automatic Updates) you don't have to visit every week. I'd even suggest you set Automatic Updates for late in the evening hours.

Keep this website handy http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.mspx
Sign up for email alerts on security issues.

If you have not already done so --- and if you administer lots of pcs (or even for home users) ---
you can get free email notices about critical & security & XP & other topics by visiting
http://www.microsoft.com/info/PICWhyRegister.htm

I'd suggest you get the XP, TechNet, & security newsletters.
