Slow response time / freeze after fresh install of Vista

I recently upgraded to Vista Ultimate from XP Pro on my home computer. The
installation process went very smoothly, but when I get to the first logon
screen directly after the successful install, the computer exhibits a
unusually long response time (1-2 minute freezes).

I can eventually see the desktop after about 5 minutes of waiting, but will
continue to experience VERY slow response time trying to open menus and
interact with the GUI. The OS is completely unusable in this state.

I even tried a re-format and ran the memory diagnostic tool (no errors),
with a fresh re-install of Vista and experienced the same symptoms.

My system passes the reqs with flying colors:
MSIRC410M
Intel Pentium D 945 3.4ghz
2 gigs of Corsair PC25400 DDR2
ATI Radeon X1900XT vid card

I think i've tried everything... any ideas?

Anything interesting in the Event Logs?

I can't find your Motherboard on MSI's web site, but verify that yo
have the latest BIOS and drivers installed

Don't bother with VISTA. It looks pretty but is unstable and slow. Gone are
the blue screens in are the grey unresponsive programme errors over and over
and over again...

If I could even get to the event logs, that would be helpful, but it would
take nearly all day to nagivate there due to the slow response time.

Yes, I believe the latest BIOS is installed, but I will double check when I
get home.
Thanks

Can you boot in Safe Mode with F8? That might rule out driver problems.

Chris I had you same problem installing Vista on a computer with the MSI
RC410M MS-7173 motherboard.

The thing is thata the board is not Vista compatible even with the latest
Bios... I trier with several Bios updates and "nada"..

Get a new motherboard Vista approved and problem solved.. I got the abit IL9
PRO and preoblem fixed.
