hey all;
Since doing a repair intallation of windows xp home, windows
update/microsoft update runs extremely slow. Whether doing a express, or
custom check, the system seems to take forever before giving me the update
options. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so how to resolve this

Thankx in advance...Jim

Is this the first time that you have repaired this particular computer? The
reason I ask is that oftentimes the repair function doesn't do a whole lot of
good, depending on what caused the need to repair the computer. I have had
similar issues with using the repair feature, and in numerous instances, the
only way to regain the old speed was to do a complete system reinstall. In
one case, the computer wouldn't operate fast with the SP1 or 2 installed.
That computer (768 MB RAM) would slow to a 64 MB RAM equivalent with either
SP installed, but would be fine without them. According to both Microsoft
and HP, it was a problem with that particular HP model, which HP continued to
promise me for over 18 months to fix. I finally donated the computer. In
some instances, the repair feature did great and I didn't have to reinstall
Windows, but those instances are outnumbered at least 4:1 by those instances
where only a clean install worked. Another thing that can affect
repair/reinstall is how long it has been since a clean reinstall has been
completed. Some people do them as often as never to anywhere from 1x or 2x
annually to as frequently as monthly.

Hey Jim,

I don't think there's anything you can do to speed up the process(es) at Windows Update, other than possibly trying your run at a very late hour of the night (your local time). IF your antivirus is "overly aggressive" (ie, scanning every bit of download), you consider doing a temporary shutdown of your AV.
But, even on my cable broadband connection, the process is s-l-o-w.
Lastly, I presume your system is not doing some other heavy processing job while you make your visit to Windows Update.
Very, very last: Check to see your system is at service pack 2. Run "WINVER". (Start > Run > type in WINVER ).

One small issue, given you did a repair-install, the Windows Update controls most likely have to be re-updated from MS.

Hey Paul;
Thankx for your reply. This was a clean install, but had problems
reactivating. Because I can't run the repair program, there is a hidden
administrator, and I can't seem to get the password from the retailor I
bought the computer from. So I did a format of the hard drive, then a clean
reinstall. Then I couldn't reactivate windows, and had to take the pc back to
the shop. They reactivated windows, and since then update been real slow.
