Slow to update

On my Toshiba laptop running XP Pro sp2 I get the update icon in the system
tray for several seconds then it disappears.
It does this for a number of days before starting the download.
The desktop running XP Pro sp2 also downloads any updates immediately as
soon as they come out.

I can of course do a manual update but I would like to fix the slow auto
update if possible.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help.
