Slow, Very Slow to Load

I have never had a problem with WLM but for the past 2 days WLM takes ages to
load. I have XP SP2. I have not made any changes except latest Microsoft
updates. I have cleared caches and run virus checkers but continue to get
these problems.
1. To get main screen takes 1-2 mins but is a 'skelton' of how it was
previously.
2. Shows 28 items remaining. Countdown of items takes over 5 mins.
3. There are blue frames where icons should be. As items remaining countdown
a red cross appears in them one by one.
4. When I click from one folder to another the same delay of counting down
items starts again.

Microsoft-watch also takes an age to access. :-(

Other Microsoft sites ie microsoft-watch are also very slow to access.

Hi RogerC,

What Anti-Virus Program is installed? If the latest McAfee VirusScan
11.2.124 version, open Windows Task Manager. Locate Mcshield.exe under the
Processes tab. Right-click on Mcshield.exe and click Set Priority. Note the
Priority level.

In Windows Vista, the Priority Level is Normal. In Windows XP Home
Edition Service Pack 2, the Priority level is High. Depending on your
Computer Hardware and its Speed, the Priority Level, affects all the other
processes, including Windows Live Messenger program.

Thank you for your reply.

I use Symantec. The security level is Medium. I allow cookies on microsoft
sites.

It is not just that WLM loads and refreshes agonizingly slowly, the screen
has blue frames where icons should be, which led me to consider a virus. I
swept my PC and it shows nothing. It is hardwired into my broadband
connection so I tried my laptop which I also checked for viruses. The laptop
is wirelessly connected but has different software on it, so I would not
expect it to be infected, but I get the same result. I also have slow access
to other microsoft websites, which made me wonder whether it was outside my
computers and that microsoft might be having a problem.

I am grateful for your input.

Hi RogerC,

There are different version of Windows Live Messenger out and you have
not posted its Built Number. Also what operating system and version, plus
Service Pack Level installed in?

Which version of Norton are you running? Does it have something like
System Guards or Protection Manager installed like McAfee? Do you have a NAS
Hard Drive or partition attached?

Hi,

Thank you for replying. I have WLM 8.1.0178.00
Windows XP SP2. All current updates completed.
Norton System Works 2005. Up to date. I know nothing about comparisons with
McAfee I am afraid. :-(

No new software. Caches are cleared. Added *.hotmail.com, et al, to trusted
sites.

I have the same problem when I log into WLM from my laptop.

I can read emails but cannot delete them or move them into another folder. I
copied about 16 lines of an email and pasted it into Word. It took 2 minutes
to paste.

I wonder whether it would be worth while uninstalling Messenger and
reinstalling it. If I go down that avenue would I lose all my archived emails?

Regards,

Hi RogerC,

Remove hotmail.com from trusted sites. Remove everything from trusted
sites. Why? It removes steps to check everything.

Oh, you can't delete E-mails downloaded from hotmail.com, because a copy
remains on hotmail.com. You need to actually log into the Hotmail.com
web-site to delete the E-mails.

Google Mail has Pop Access, where you can download E-mails off the
server and delete them.

http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/why_gmail.html

http://mail.google.com/mail/help/int..._whatsnew.html

You can add this plug-in: http://msgpluslive.net/ to Windows Live
Messenger and check your Gmail.com E-mails all from within Windows Live
Messenger.

What I meant about version of Windows XP is like Windows XP Home
Edition, Windows XP Professional Edition, Windows XP Professional X64
Edition. Or even Windows XP Media Edition.

Are you using Outlook or Outlook Express? Have you set up the program
to read your E-mails at hotmail.com from within those programs?

Hello thecreator,

I am most grateful for you help, albeit I was not providing sufficient
information. :-( An 'age-thing' I am afraid.

I just logged into Hotmail at 0830 and it is running as smoothly as it
always did. I was most surprised! I checked the other websites that I was
having problem with to make sure all was well and they also loaded in
seconds. I can even receive beta test programs now should I wish to.

I have checked using my laptop and connected to Hotmail and this too runs
OK. I do not know what the problem was. I could not understand why both my PC
and laptop were having the same problem. They do not run the same anti-virus
or firewall. The only similar programs are Works and Office and Hotmail.

It looks as though everything is fine. Why it returned to normal, I do not
know. I have made no changes, other than those aready mentioned. So fingers
crossed... :-)

Many thanks and I really appreciate your help and I will look at your
suggestions,

RogerC
