slow windows splash screen

I've had this problem now for about 1 week where it takes ages for windows to
load, the splash screen stays for ages before it prompts you for your
password to enter windows desktop. I am running xp pro, no new software has
been installed for this problem to happen.

any idea's please?

This specific group is dedicated to Windows Update issues.
You will be best helped at these groups:
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support
microsoft.public.windowsxp.newusers
microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

There are way too many possibilities causing your particular situation. Begin by trimming back your startup programs.
