slower than dialup

I connect at 11 mbps on my wireless network using whatever unsecured public
network that's available. Why do the pages take forever? I have 1gb memory
and a dual processor, so if the status says 11 mbps, shouldn't it be at
least faster than dialup?

Your speed of connection is dependent on the slowest piece of the pipeline.
It has nothing to do with your processor or amount of installed memory, they
are only used to render the image once received. An 11Mbps connection should
be quick, much faster than a dialup, but public unsecured networks are often
notoriously slow. Just because your machine is capable of receiving at that
speed does not mean the network will feed it that fast.

Look at it this way: If you have a 1/2" pipe bring water to your home, it's
not going to matter if the sink faucet opening is 3" wide as water will only
flow as fast as the 1/2" pipe will allow.

So what's the solution? Would installing DSL make it faster? I have DSL on
my desktop but haven't installed it on the laptop as I'm confused about
routers and adapters and network cards. And these come in a "G" type and a
"N" type and I have no idea what to get or how to configure. My laptop
obviously has a built-in wireless card as I'm able to connect to my
neighbor's unsecured network (he doesn't mind) but it sure is slow. Any
suggestions?

Hi,

If you have a DSL connection, you should get a wireless router (one that
supports wireless G) so that you can connect both your desktop and laptop to
it. They are very easy to configure now, and a decent one can be found for
less than $50-$60 US.
