Small Business 2003 and Exchange nearly at its limit

Hello.
I have a customer with an SBS 2003 server, and the Private Store is now
70GB. What options have I got to upgrade them out of this? Does SBS 2008
offer a larger store size than the 75GB limit on Exchange 2003 SP2 ?
Presumably I can take them to full blown exchange? Does this need to be on a
different server and if so, what's the upgrade path?

Anyone done this?

regards
Simon

Hi Simon:

Seems to me this custimer should upgrade to SBS 2008, which has practically
unlimited storage in Exchange, and/or, but probably and, do much house keeping.
If all that mail is a keeper, maybe an archiving product?

Yes, you could go with Exchange 2007, but it would require another server
that has 64-bit hardware. As Larry, said, upgrading to SBS 2008 (which
includes Exchange 2007) is probably a better approach. However, SBS 2008
does have the same 64-bit hardware requirement. So, unless your current SBS
2003 server is 64-bit (and upgradeable to at least 8GB of RAM), a new server
would be required in either case.

I gather they can't cull some of the emails? Email isn't really for data
storage ;-(

An archiving product may be in the cards:

Also, the public store can also have up to 75 GB as well - some companies
archive to there.

I also like the SBS 2008 approach. I would need to upgrade the hardware at
the same time, so that I can get them on to 64bit hardware (and remove the
memory limitation). I hear what you are all saying about archiving and we
have already used much of the public folder store capacity - but this company
is growing fast and is in no mind to change its ways at present, they just
want a bigger bucket.

Presumably there is an upgrade path on to a new SBS 2008 server? Helpful
link anyone? They also have a 2003 Terminal Server, 2003 Notes Server and
BlackBerry Enterprise server in the mix.

Simon

Attenna go up at "growing fast". Do not forget there is a 75 user and /or
device limit in SBS. With this many servers, and if you would anticipate
70 plus connections / users , you may want to consider EBS, or, as you first
suggested, stand alone.

Hello Simon,

Thanks for your post and others' good suggestions.

First of all, I still would like to suggest you try to optimize the "old" SBS 2003 server and improve its capacity and performance if Exchange storage is the ONLY bottleneck. Here is an article about
how to increase the Exchange 2003 private mail store size you may have a look:

Step-by-Step Guide to Increasing the Exchange 2003 Private Mail Store Size on Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...08(WS.10).aspx

However, if you have decided to migrate to new SBS 2008 with 64 bit platform including Exchange 2007 Standard, I agree with others' good advice.

Essentially there are no limits to the Exchange Server 2007 Standard Edition database size. By default, Exchange 2007 SP1 sets a limit of 250 GB that can be changed if needed. Also note that you
can have up to 5 storage groups with a maximum of 1 database per group, meaning that you can have up to 5 databases. In SBS 2008 we use 2 storage groups (2 databases) by default.
Realistically, database performance is dependent on number of processors; amount of RAM, speed of your I/O backplane and storage array configuration, so proper mailbox management policies
should be in place to prevent creating back-pressure situations that would affect the server's performance.

What are the limits for the Exchange store? (Windows Small Business Server 2008 Technical FAQ)
