I don't think so. If you used the Vista beta, they had something similar for images there in
Windows explorer itself and then removed it citing the same "it was too small to be useful"
excuse.
However, you can get this feature back by using an "unsupported" (aka no stamp of approval
from Microsoft) patch. The "Mess" Patch will do this
for you which you can find here:
http://www.mess.be
(look for the Mess patch link in the top headlines).
The feature in question is "Show Small Display Pictures In Normal View".
