Had a virus and had to go back to an backup, now sp3 won't install saying
that smss.exe is in use by another application. I've tried to kill everything
running, but still fails. Renamed download folder to .old & tried again.
Same. Also went into services.msc to verify that my Background Intelligent
Transfer Service was started & set to auto. Still nothing. Any suggestions???

Judging from similar posts here in the past month or so, the behavior may be
due to a Vundo-ZLOB-SDBot infection, all of which is protected by a rootkit.

to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Also let me state that I couldn't use system restore due to the virus. Had to
use a backup from 06-08-08 . I also have 3 security updates that won't
install all with the same error code of 0x8007F0F1.

They are:
kb890046, kb920213, kb932168
