Is there anyway to create a Server 2008 Core SMTP server? I don't think
there is, but confirmation would be nice. I know I can do it in Server 2008
full, but I'm in need of a dedicated SMTP box and it'd be nice to do it with
Core. Thanks.

Interesting quesiton. So SMTP is part of IIS 7.0 and IIS7.0 is a core role.

Now you may not want all that extra, but it seems like something doable. The
only thing missing is asp.net

So, sounds promising, but I don't have anything detailed.

Did you ever get it to work? I want to create a dedicated SMTP virtual server and I don't need/want a full installation of the OS.

Hi...I suggest you not use the Egghead (or Techarena, etc) forums to access
the newsgroups.
The interface doesn't quote properly, and you're replying to a post which is
no longer on the news server, so it's unlikely that anyone will know what
you're talking about. Also, "me too" posts don't get much attention - post
new questions as new threads.

Try using a news client, such as Forte Agent, Thunderbird, or even Outlook
Express, instead. It's a lot easier to do nearly everything that way. You
can mark messages to be watched, filter the views so you can see replies to
your posts easily, and search.

The Microsoft public news server is msnews.microsoft.com and you can
subscribe to as many groups as you like; no authentication is required.
