I am amazed by the amount of traffic this group sees. Maybe it's me, but
it seems like 'windows update' is really screwed up. I know millions of
people use XP (I do), but I think only a small percentage of them find
this group. I have not personally had a problem with it, but something
needs fixing, judging from these posts.

Windows Update is not "really screwed up". The purpose of
this newsgroup is to help those who managed to "screw up"
their own computer.

In contrast to many OS-oriented ng's, this one serves users with many OS's
who are experiencing WU problems.
And you see many people with problems at the hospital since that is where
they go to get help.
You do not expect to see many "well" people there.

Let me see if I got this right!
Dave Smith's post,
1) identifies no particular problem,
2) asks for no specific help with anything,
3) in one breath, feels windowsupdate is all "screwed up" yet personally he
doesn't have a problem with it and
4) goes so far as to suggest that the problem which remains unnamed, needs
fixing!!
Okay Dave, it is you. That's an idiot post if I ever did see one.
BUT Carey, your mindless response has to make you the clear winner here.

The purpose of

Somehow the above comment implies that one has to make an effort to f**k up
Windows.
Well as an example, I have been trying to install a "security update"
(KB886903) without success ( please see my earlier post yesterday ). Now
let's say my machine is attacked via this avenue, exactly who would have
screwed up???
May I recommend the following:-

That makes sense.
Sorry for posting my frustrations. I was out of line.

Hi Carey,
Thanks for the link. Sorry about the late response but I just didn't get a
chance before now ( work pressure).
I got useful information from that site (there was even someone with the
identical problem ; they hadn't been responded to)
but after trying a couple more things, still no go, so I called Microsoft
and a rep walked me through the solution.
For those interested or having a similar issue, the key was in running
Windows Installer Cleanup to remove the damaged .NET 1.1. Once that was
taken care of, a new download of dotnetfx.exe (and its' service pack 1)
went in without any glitches. Then returned to Windows update and applied
the patch (KB 886903).
I think if I had tried to troubleshoot this when the problem first appeared
( i.e. mid February ) the going would have been easier as several persons
had a similar issue around the time and there was a lot more information
regarding kb886903 flying around then, but a month later it was old news and
much harder to get info from the windowsupdate NG for example.

I should mention that both my calls to Microsoft were well after the end of
business hours on weekdays and I recieved excellent service in both
instances. (The first time I called I had to ring off as it was close to
midnight and I had an early morning to deal with.)
Kudos to them!

BTW, because this was an issue with a security update, there was no charge.
