Hi Carey,
Thanks for the link. Sorry about the late response but I just didn't get a
chance before now ( work pressure).
I got useful information from that site (there was even someone with the
identical problem ; they hadn't been responded to)
but after trying a couple more things, still no go, so I called Microsoft
and a rep walked me through the solution.
For those interested or having a similar issue, the key was in running
Windows Installer Cleanup to remove the damaged .NET 1.1. Once that was
taken care of, a new download of dotnetfx.exe (and its' service pack 1)
went in without any glitches. Then returned to Windows update and applied
the patch (KB 886903).
I think if I had tried to troubleshoot this when the problem first appeared
( i.e. mid February ) the going would have been easier as several persons
had a similar issue around the time and there was a lot more information
regarding kb886903 flying around then, but a month later it was old news and
much harder to get info from the windowsupdate NG for example.
I should mention that both my calls to Microsoft were well after the end of
business hours on weekdays and I recieved excellent service in both
instances. (The first time I called I had to ring off as it was close to
midnight and I had an early morning to deal with.)
Kudos to them!
