I have had three clients in the last week who are on Automatic Updates in
Windows XP, where the "Software Distrubtion Service 2.0" downloads and
installs automatically overnight. In each case after it is installed the
Windows Browsing function slows to a crawl, or does not respond at all. I've
had to do a System Restore to just prior to the SDS 2.0 installation to fix
the problem. Then turn off Automatic Updates. Does anyone know why this is
happening and what the fix may be?

Try removing the KB908531 file, I did that and it corrected the problem, but
then you'll need to turn off automatic updates. To remove the file, Control
Panel-Add/Remove programs-be sure to check show updates box, then look at
your HotFix buttons. Good Luck

In mid-April I stated having the following problems:
(1) Windows Explorer (Grandchild of File Manager) got very very slow, and
then when trying to close it, it would lock up.
(2) Trying to save email attachments and sometimes just documents, the
window would open to select the location, such as directory names/folder
names and it would lock up also. Thank Bill and God that the Word 2003
recovery worked.

I was starting to contribute it to the "Software Distribution Service 2.0"
on 4/13/06. However, after recovering to before the 4/13/06 updates, I
quickly turned off "Automatic Updates" and got the system working smoothly
again.

Today I installed the "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
and the system still worked smoothly, especially "Windows Explorer."

However, after installing the following updates, "Windows Explorer" is now
very very very sluggish and locks up

(1) Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express for
Windows XP (KB911567)
(2) Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)
(3) Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for
Windows XP (KB912812)
(4) Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB911562)
(5) Windows XP Security Update for Windows Media Player 10 for Windows
XP (KB911565)
(6) Office 2003 Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB914454)
(7) Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool – April 2006
(KB890830)

Looking back, those are the 7 updates that were automatically installed opn
4/13/06 when it started acting up.

This is the first time I've been to this forum, and will look to see if
someone has a solution or more info. Otherwise, I'll restore to my Friday's
restor point, and then load these updates one at a time and see if I can find
which one is the culpit.

This has been the biggest screwup I've ever seen from Microsoft. I could not
do a system restore to before SDS2.0 was installed until I finally did it in
"safe" mode. Got everything back working right and turned off auto updates.
It's pretty bad when you can't trust Microsoft to update Windows without
screwing it up.
