Software Distribution Services 3.0 Stops Programs

I use ACT! 5.04 on Windows XP. No problem for many years. This month just
after my automatic download of the Windows Updates, ACT stopped loading. I
get the standard error message to send Microsoft the info. I tried resetting
my computer to before the update installation which showed "Software
Distribution Services 3.0" as the last set point. It won't let me reset past
this. I have seen that others have had similar problems such as not being
able to access the internet after this update installs, but I can't seem to
find a solution. I can't even reinstall ACT because something is blocking
that attempt also. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know a
solution?

Which updates were installed?

CrystalBall© sez:

See http://accessblog.net/2009/02/kb9607...cess-apps.html

Or...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB960715).

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

1. They're listed and dated in Add/Remove Programs (if Show Updates option
is enabled).

2. They're listed in Update History at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

3. They're listed in WindowsUpdate.log.

How to read the WindowsUpdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Did you read

Both updates qualify for free support, Tom. Have you opened a free Support
Incident yet? See my earlier reply.

Unfortunately, I think you're encountering the problem because the age of
and lack of continuing support for ACT! 5.04 (i.e., outdated & unpatched
Visual Basic controls). Once agin, see these two related pages:

http://accessblog.net/2009/02/kb9607...cess-apps.html

http://blogs.msdn.com/askie/archive/...-kb960715.aspx

NB: Uninstalling KB960715 may resolve your problem but you should understand
that (1) your machine once again will be vulnerable to certain security
flaws in those outdated controls and (2) there will be another future update
which will set the same killbits in KB960715 (which, in turn, includes the
killbits in KB932349 (MS08-070).

Best of luck.
