"Swensonl",
We need a little more information. Would you mind running through another attempted installation on the Windows Update website and sending us back the results? Here's how: Conventions: - In these instructions, keys on the keyboard are wrapped, such as: <Enter>, so an instruction of: Type: cmd <Enter> means type the three letters cmd and then press <Enter>. - Combinations such as <Ctrl>+<S> and <Ctrl>+<Shift>+<End> mean to press and hold the keys in order while then pressing the last key. For example, press the <Ctrl> key and hold, then press the <Shift> key and hold, and then press the <End> key as if you were typing a single letter of the alphabet. On Windows XP: 1. Close all Internet browsers 2. Open a single Internet Explorer window. 3. In the Internet Explorer window, click Tools 4. Click Windows Update 5. When you reach the Windows Update site, click Custom Install 6. Click Review and Install Updates 7. When presented with multiple updates, uncheck all of them except for one update (your choice) 8. Look down at the System clock and note the time. Let the minute move forward one, so that there is no other activity associated with this attempt. 9. Click Install. Wait for Windows Update to fail. If it succeeds, reply back and let us know. 10. Assuming it failed, Click Start 11. Click Run 12. Type: %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log 13. Press <Enter> or Click OK 14. When the log opens, scroll down to the hour and minute you memorized in step 8. 15. Starting at the beginning of the first entry for that minute, click and drag down and to the right selecting the rest of the log. 16. Click Edit, then Copy, or just press the <CTRL> and <C> keys. 17. Reply to this posting. 18. When that window opens, Tell us what update you attempted to install, and where it failed from your observation. 19. After this, on a new line, state the following and press <Enter>: Log entries follow: 20. Place the cursor on the line under the entry from step 19, and then click Edit, then Paste, or just press the <CTRL> and <V> keys. 21. The log entries copied in steps 15-16 should have copied into your posting. 22. Send it to us, and let us take a look at this failure. On Windows 2000 Repeat steps 1-22 above, with the following changes: 6. When you reach the Windows Update site, click Scan for updates 12. The file is "%WINDIR%\Windows Update.log" (please INCLUDE the quotes and notice the space between windows and update) On Windows 98 This is identical to Windows 2000, but %windir% does not exist in Windows 98. Instead: 12. Change %WINDIR% to %WINBOOTDIR% Sincerely, Pat Walters [MSFT] "Swensonl" <> wrote in message news:23FEC21F-0344-42F5-B773-... > I am having the same problem with software updates being incomplete and I > feel like have looked through and tried all the suggestions in these threads. > I run on Windows 98. I am already stuck on Step 5 because when I open the updates page all I see
on the right hand side of the page is: Software Update Incomplete The Windows Update software did not update successfully. Below are some suggestions to help you proceed: You may have clicked No when prompted to accept the Trust Certificate. To allow the Windows Update site software to install, click Yes when presented with the Security Warning dialog box. Your Internet Explorer security settings may be set too high. To install the updated software and access Windows Update, Internet Explorer security must be set to medium or lower, and active scripting and the download and initialization of ActiveX controls must be enabled. Note These are the default settings for Internet Explorer. For more information about Internet Explorer security and instructions on how to change your security settings, read Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q174360. Were these suggestions helpful? Send us your feedback. Try Again You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows Update. Send error number to Microsoft (0x800B0004) Note This sends error information but does not create a support incident; you may or may not receive a response. On the left hand page are the following options: Welcome: (which is highlighted) Pick updates... which is not clickable Review updates....which is not clickable Other options-none of which are clickable except Get help and support which I have already tried, then also: See Also: About Window Updates. This is also selectable. I have sent the error report at least twice. the error is 0x800B0004. I have followed all the instructions about that error including cleaning out my vs folder and reloading Active X controls. I'm sorry to be a pest, but this is really bothering me and my computer function is going downhill. "Pat Walters [MSFT]" wrote: > "Swensonl", > > We need a little more information. I just went to find files and folders and typed *.log and looked for windows
update because when I tried to run %WINBOOTDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log the computer gave me an error message that it couldn't find the file, and to make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. Using the method above. I found the time of the error and this is what the log said: 2005-03-29 19:25:19 01:25:19 Error IUCTL Digital Signatures on file C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\temp\iuident.cab are not trusted (Error 0x800B0109) 2005-03-29 19:25:19 01:25:19 Error IUCTL Digital Signatures on file C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\temp\iuident.cab are not trusted (Error 0x800B0004) 2005-03-29 19:25:19 01:25:19 Error IUCTL Failed to download iuident.cab from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/ to C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\temp (Error 0x800B0004) 2005-03-29 19:25:20 01:25:20 Success IUENGINE Starting Keep in mind also, I have the computer set at the lowest possible security ratings while I am attempting to do all this. I am going to be gone for a week starting Thursday, so anything after that, I will have to get back to you. Thanks for your help. Is there any more help you can give me with this problem. I have been using
Windows software updates with no problem for years. I notice there are a lot of people having this same or similar problem. I have been having this problem for months, and I fianlly got my windows 98
to update. I swear I had tried this before, but this time i did this with my virus shield closed. Don't know if that had anything to do with the solution or not, but here is what I did. hope this will help some one else who has been getting the dreaded error message: 0x800B0004. I actually found this answer on the Windows update and troubleshooter page (again, I'm sure I did this before so maybe they had new information): http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ __________________________________________________ ___________________- -- There are several potential causes for this error. First of all, make sure you are running the current version of Internet Explorer. At this time, the current version is IE 6 SP1. You can install IE 6 SP1 from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...p1/default.asp Secondly, if you are using a proxy server ask your network administrator to make sure that the proxy server is set to allow anonymous connections to the Internet. Some more specific steps you can try to resolve this issue: Suggestion 1 ============ Register the following files with these steps: 1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL" (w/o the quotes). You should see a popup message that this process succeeded. 2. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL" (w/o the quotes). You should see a popup message that this process succeeded. 3. Click on Start, Run and type "REGSVR32 MSSIP32.DLL" (w/o the quotes). You should see a popup message that this process succeeded. 4. Now try the Windows Update site and see if you get the same error. none "Swensonl" wrote: > I am having the same problem with software updates being incomplete and I > feel like have looked through and tried all the suggestions in these threads. > I run on Windows 98.
