Software update for a DELL laptop driver

Hi,

I've got a DELL Latitude D505 laptop with a "wrong" driver, since it can't
display more than 1078x780 pixels (it should at least display 1400x1080).
Windows Update prompts me to install a "software update" for this driver,
but the installation fails.

So I would like to find this patch in the Windows catalog to download it
onto my hard drive
and to better understand why it fails ! The Windows Update error is not
documented.

Patch is:

Dell Inc. - Monitors - Dell M783p
Dell Inc. monitor software update released on March 11 2004.

Sincerely

You have a Dell.
Get your hardware drivers FROM DELL.

If you had a Microsoft Laptop - you'd get your drivers from Microsoft.
You don't have a Microsoft laptop.
You have a Dell.

Yes I've tried that, but the driver hasn't changed...

Yes sir, but this is with Microsoft Update that I could update the driver !
I wish I could find another way to achieve that...

And a driver for Windows XP ;-)

Dell has an M783s video driver you can find on either the French or
English support page for their Latitude D505. You could try that, but
I think you should explain your display problem on Dell's tech forum first.
The M783s is just one of 40 display drivers listed for the Latitude D505.

Yes indeed, but this is a driver for an additional flat screen.

I've reloaded the driver for my "Extreme graphics" graphic controler, but
it hasn't changed. Thus I can conclude that this is purely a Microsoft pb,
and therefore - and this was the object of my post - only a Microsoft update
should fix that.

However, I will try to search the Dell tech forums.

Thanks

Yes, that is possible. When Bob posted recently that he needed Microsoft
to fix a problem he had with his wireless card I doubted it, but after several
posts I accepted that Belkin had told him that, and that Microsoft needed to
correct a configuration problem with Windows Media Center Edition 2005.

People having lots of no luck with driver updates from WU has got those
who respond here to advise, "always get drivers from the manufacturers."
Helping you to get a driver from WU goes against that accepted wisdom.

In his response to a different problem, Lawrence Garvin (MVP) said that
0x8024200B is a generic error code and that the log wasn't much help.
Unless Dell tells you that Microsoft must fix the problem, ought you not
get a solution from Dell, as you are attempting?

Windows Update will sometimes try to install various drivers through Express
or Custom mode and may have problems (seems to be more with display drivers,
labeled "Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher" and error codes
can include 0x80070103 and others), so those "MVPs" that are telling you not
to get your drivers from WU/MU, although correct in that it is better to get
them from the manufacturer are wrong in that MS is responsible for these
errors since they are trying to install them through WU/MU and since MS is
charging companies to sign these drivers, they might as well do some work for
that money.

SOLUTION: When you get one of these failed driver downloads from WU/MU, just
go to system; device manager; right click the device and click "update
driver"; and do the automatic install. [Though MU/WU will recognize that you
need a new driver, it often can't install it but the "update driver" method
should work fine.]
