Hi,
Can anyone help please?. I have Windows XP home edition and have automatic
updates enabled, but visit the update centre for optional software & hardware
updates. I have the activeX installed which allows the centre to see which
updates are available. This time (15/12/05) there are 2 software and 1
hardware updates available. When I try to install them the activeX starts to
re-check my computer and just comes up with the previous screen of express
and custom options.

I had the same problem on w2000 pro with complete reinstall, only way I could
solve it was to go to manual downloads and bring 2000 up to sp4 and IE up to
SP1 latest revision and then it started to work correctly.

ActiveX controls may not load as expected in Internet Explorer due to
defense in depth changes introduced in cumulative security update 896688
(MS05-052): http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=909889

A Web page that contains a custom ActiveX control may not load as expected
in Internet Explorer due to defense in depth changes introduced in
cumulative security update 896688 (MS05-052):
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=909738

=> The fix detailed in 909889 involving the Registry and OLE32.DLL is
available at

- http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip or

- http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/kb896688_fix.zip (a small VB app that
checks the 4 values and offers a repair option if any of them are
incorrect).
