The following Microsoft Product Support Services solution worked for me.

Issue

1. Windows Updates were not working.
2. Error 0x8007041D is generated while trying to do updates.

Analysis and Resolution

1. Machine is a Windows 2000 Professional
2. Issues started after Windows Updates were applied
3. SENS, COM+ Event Subsystem, BITS, Automatic Updates were not Started
4. Followed the following steps

STEP 1
=======

a. Backup and then Delete Eventsystem from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\EventSystem

Reboot server.

b. Open a command prompt and CD to %windir%\system32.

Run the command
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

c. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Double click the service "Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS)"

Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local
System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with
desktop" is unchecked.

Set startup type as mentioned & start services according to the sequence as
follows:

1. Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Auto
2. COM+ Event System
Manual
3. System Event Notification
Auto
4. Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions
Auto
5. Bits
Manual
6. Automatic updates
Auto

Start the services. (If the Services start no need to proceed to the second
step.)

Step 2
======

Review the registry subkey for SENS (system event notification) under
HKLM\System\CurrentControlset\Services\SENS

Imagepath is correct, service group and start values are also correct

Servicedll correctly pointed to sens.dll.

Checked everything and restarted the machine.
Every Service Started correctly
Ran windows update.
All the updates were downloaded and installed

Hi there

You really rock!! I have been searching for a fix for weeks and the only one
that worked was in an earlier response by you to someone else. Many, many
thanks!!
Click "start" then "run" and type in the following command:

%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection
DefaultInstall 132 %SystemRoot%\inf\au.inf

and hit enter. All I had to do after was reboot and Microsoft Update works
perfectly.

Truly grateful!!
Jacqui
