Solution for error: 0x80248011

Try checking to make sure you haven’t inadvertently removed a System account
from your volume.

I found that if you modify the NTFS permissions on a volume in Windows, the
System account might be inadvertently removed from the partition. If this
occurs, the System account cannot manage some system functions - such as
updates.

By default, the Everyone group has Full Control permissions on an NTFS
volume and the Everyone group includes the System account. If this permission
or group was removed (for instance to provide additional security) without
adding the System account as an individual account renders the updates
unusable. Even though individual accounts, such as the Administrator account,
may have been added.

This worked in my situation when none of the other solution did.
Please reply if this helps.

I found another solution for this problem:

To fix this error 0x80248011. try the following in the command prompt. The
steps to follow are given below.

Click on Start - run - type command "cmd" and command prompt will appear.
After you are in command prompt try the following commands.

1) net stop wuauserv
2) cd /d %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
3) rd /s DataStore
4) net start wuauserv

Try to run windows update after these steps and let me know if this helps.

You are Da Man!!!! I had tried everything here and nothing was working. Then
I read your message and remembered that I was testing an eval copy of Secure
Copy to copy from one PC to another. This program copies permissions as well
and I had inadvertantly copied to my root dir the first time I tried this.
When I checked my C: partition and compared it to my D: partition, they were
waaay different. I fixed my C; partition and now it is working again...I
imagine that this was the cause of many other things that started to go wrong
today as well.

How do I do this and how can I check if this has happened?

echsb:

You're talking about the right thing here, but actually the problem doesn't
have to be that big. For example in my case it seemed that some buggy program
had decided to strip my computer's SYSTEM account of any rights to the C:
drive of my machine. This prevented the SYSTEM from doing its do. The account
was there, but it had unsufficient rights.

Please check the link for the fix:

http://ms-os.com/showthread.php?t=34308

The linked discussion talks about another error number 0xC8000408 (though
which was actually in my update log as one of the errors.), but it fixes the
0x80248011 at least in my case. My System Restore has also started work again.
