KB916521 Junk Update Office 2003 -A SOLUTION

Problem is destructin of registry keys CAUSED BY running MICROSOFT LIVE
SAFETY CENTER REGISTRY CLEANER!!
Restore them with a double click on the .reg backup file in C:\Documents and
Settings\<user>\Applicaion Data\Windows Live Safety Center\Backup.
Nice one, Microsoft.

Mark H.:
Thanks for the tip.

Microsoft's Live Safety Registry Cleaner was to blaim for my troubles, too!

Your technique worked for me after I double-clicked each of the .reg backup
files, to merge them back into the registry. Merging the newest .reg backup
file, by itself, was not enough. My older .reg backup files could not be
merged back into the registry, but I double-clicked the .xml files for those
files (including accepting the Active-X scripts -- semed like a good idea).

Then, I was able to download and apply the "Critical Updates" for MS Word,
PowerPoint and Outlook.

You're the man.

YES! That worked for me too. I just double-clicked on the .reg backup
file. I didn't even know it was there! So I have a question:

Where did "Live Safety Registry Cleaner" come from?

I don't remember installing that myself (on my home computer) so was that
part of some automated program or am I absent-minded? The date on my .reg
backup file was 5/21/2006 so I think I would have remembered a recent
installation.

It doesn't come from anywhere. It is a web site that you visit.

Oh yeah, it's coming back to me now. Thanks... I posted some feedback on
that site about this issue. Hopefully someone will investigate.

To restore from the backup made by the Windows Live Safety Center, do the
following:

Use control panel "Folder Options", tab "View", to enable "Show hidden files
and folders", and un-check "Hide extensions for known file types".

Close all Internet Explorer windows.

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Windows Live Safety
Center\BackUp\

and double-click the .reg file previously created by the Microsoft Safety
registry cleanup.

Please report back whether this fixes your problem.

I'm irritated to think it could do it to me again!

Thanks for the help

Windows Live Safety Center is a web site you visit, not an application that
you have installed on the PC. So there is nothing to uninstall.
