Hi,

I had many problems on a XPSP2 (part of an AD domain) computer to get V6
update to work. I tried many of the solutions mentioned here, but none really
led to a result, so i figured out another way that helped in my case:

- Download the standalone version of "Windows Update Agent 2.0"
- check whether all the neccessary "update"-URLs (8 if i am correct) are
within the "trusted zone" of IE
- temporary deactivate the GPO that enforces automatic updates on client
computers
- do a local refresh of the GPO via gpupdate
- Deactivate all modules of your antivirus product
- Deactivate AntiSpyware
- Reboot
- Stop the service "Automatic updates" and change its startup-type to manual
- Make a backup copy of all files and folders under
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution
- Delete all files and folders under %windir%\SoftwareDistribution (not the
folder itself
- Reboot
- Install the standalone version of "Windows Update Agent 2.0" (it did not
work when i tried it without the steps above) via the command line with the
switch "/wuforce"
- Do a reboot (although the setup program did not ask for it
- Open IE and type in "update.microsoft.com" (do not use the link to
WindowsUpdate in the start menu or the one in IE, type it in manually)
- On the page that opens click on "Microsoft Update"
- You will be asked to install the software, click accept
- you will be redirected to WindowsUpdate V6 and the scanning works
- Reenable Antivirus, AntiSpyware and GPO

Maybe this helps you too
