Some important updates don't download & install automatically?

I was under the impression that important updates would download and install
automatically (assuming default settings). A small number of important
updates still seem to remain unchecked when I manually peek into important
updates. One example would be Office 2007 SP2. Another was a security patch
for IE8 x64 version. For Office 2007 SP2, even if I check the box next to it,
it will be unchecked if I close and re-open Windows Update. Running Windows 7
64-bit.

Any explanation for this behavior?

Are you running Win7 64-bit RC, Win7 64-bit RTM, or do you have a new
computer with Win7 preinstalled?

Has KB947821 been installed yet?

Do you need that service pack? What all does it update?
Perhaps all it is is a repackaging of current maintenance?
In that case you could already have the equivalent of the service pack
installed and therefore not be offered it.

BTW I haven't bothered trying to do the necessary research
which would have answered those questions.
