Some updates could not be installed...- .NET 1.1 and ver 2.0

I just did a fresh install (reinstall) of WinXP home to a Dell Dimension
2400 Cel 2.2g w/256m ram.
First thing I did after windows was up and running was install SP3, then
went back and installed all critical updates and added .NET 1.1 and 2.0.

Now my problem is this;
I get the message: "Some updates could not be installed", they are;
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 service pack 1
and
Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0

I ran ALL these update before downloading and installing any AV, Firewall or
Anti-Spyware, it's a clean install.

I was running them from the MS update site, now that they're on the Pc and I
get the little gold shield telling me I have updates, that doesn't seem to
make any difference. I've rebooted several times, shut down and restarted...
The only thing I didn't have time to do yet was try from "safe mode".

Any suggestions?
Brad

1. CrystalBall© sez...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Ignore the title, if necessary; also applies to Upgrade installs, and
Recovery installs.

2. If .NET Framework installations continue to fail:

Write down what .NET Framework versions are already installed before you go
uninstalling/removing any of them!

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

Now see Resolutions Methods 1 or 2 in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100
(ignore the title).

If no joy, see this related post by my colleague MowGreen:

No, I haven't "modified" anything.
The HDD was clean, erased, reformatted and then XP reinstalled from factory
disc.

Brad,

Follow the methods in article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
which was referred by my colleague PA Bear

Do Method 1 in that article. Restart system and retry Windows Updates.
If still no joy, do method 2.

The update controls from your XP CD are older than the current ones from
Windows Updates, and there is an issue of re-registering wups2.dll
(again, covered in the article)

Thank You,
PABear and Maurice N for your speedy replies and suggestions.

Deleting and reinstalling didn't help, I got the "some update could not be
installed" when trying to re-install .NET 1.1 by itself.

Re-registering wups32.dll was the fix and answer to my problems. I now have
..NET 1.1, 2.0 and their respective service packs and updates installed. =)
happy camper!

Is this more of a WinXP "Home" issue? I followed my same procedure with
XPpro and didn't have these issues.

Again a BIG Thank You for your support and suggestions,
Brad

Hi Brad,
The "issue" got it's start when you re-installed your XP. Not your fault
though. It is all due to Windows Updates using newer versions of software
and the ones from re-install were older ("frozen in time" on your Windows
CD). The re-registering of the 1 dll file solves the issue in a large
number of cases.
Note also that it is not an issue of whether your Windows is XP Home or XP
Pro, or even Vista.
Your update is appreciated. All the best to you.
