Diary of a Microsoft Windows Security Update Support Problem.
Posted so the usenet record has this solution for everyone
especially if a hacker has already compromised your machine
by making use of this flaw.
Start Diary:
I received the following message on my Windows XP Home computer
Automatic Updates: Some updates could not be installed
The following updates were not installed:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB944338)
...........
I googled and saw many people had the same problem (possibly because a
hacker has previously compromised the system using this flaw).
Security Update for Windows XP (KB944338)
A security issue has been identified in VBScript and Jscript that could
allow an attacker to compromise your Microsoft Windows-based system and
gain control over it.
Some suggested calling the free Microsoft Support number at:
800-PC-SAFETY
...........
I called Microsoft Windows Security Update Support at 800-PC-SAFETY
They told me to start a live-meeting session:
http://eaea.notlong.com
Session ID = wgrfnq
...........
The problem was that live meeting would not run.
Install console LSSetup_en_us.exe (Microsoft Easy Assist)
...........
So, they had me go to a different live meeting site:
http://easy342.notlong.com
...........
The problem was that this live meeting session would not work either.
So they had me run the following command:
Start -> Run ->inetcpl.cpl
...........
But, nothing happened, so they had me go to this site:
http://xp02.notlong.com
...........
At that Microsoft Support site, they had me run this batch file:
Windows Update Issues
1. windowsupdate.bat Re-register dll files related to Windows Update
...........
After that batch file "repaired" things, they had me run the update:
Start -> All Programs -> Windows Update
Which, not surprisingly, listed this update was missing from my computer:
High-priority updates
Microsoft Windows XP
Security Update for Windows XP (KB944338)
...........
At this point, we went the totally manual route by going to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944338
and then clicked on the IT-professional link
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms08-022.mspx
...........
Which eventually got us to the long link
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

...........
Once this "Windows Script 5.7 for Windows XP Home" was manually installed,
the Windows XP Home computer rebooted.
