Hi,
You shouldn't need to have Shockwave installed to view videos at youtube.

Look into these possibilities:
1. Start Internet Explorer without add-ons from:
Right-click the IE icon on the desktop. Choose Start without add-ons.
or
Programs> Accessories> System tools> Internet Explorer (no add-ons)
If the problem goes away, you have an incompatible browser add-on installed.

2. Does this problem persist if you enable Windows defender and the Windows
Firewall and disable third-party security programs?

3. Third-party antivirus/antispyware programs should be disabled when
installing Internet Explorer. If they weren't you may have a corrupted
installation of IE8. Reinstalling with these programs disabled may be the
solution.

You may have to uninstall (instead of merely disabling) some third-party
security programs while installing Internet Explorer.
Removing McAfee may require a removal tool

As Don Varnau has already pointed out in this thread, you don't need the
Shockwave Player in order to view Youtube videos. You only need the Flash
Player installed and working properly to view Youtube content. If the
animations are working at the following adobe test page:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/

Then your Flash Player and Shockwave Player are installed properly and your
problems are not being cause by the Flash Player(See Don Varnau's latest
post for additional troubleshooting ideas)

I apologize for my delay in the answer, I am travelling and do not have
regular access to the web.

Thank you very much for your comments. I will read them more in detail and
test everything you suggest as soon as possible. I have been out of home for
