The intruded probably guessed your email address - and was trying
to invade your privacy.
You will be safe, provided you have configured the privacy
settings in WLMessenger so that "Only people on your Allow list
can see your status and send you messages".
Every time anyone tries to add you as a contact, you will receive
a pop-up warning. Then, you must add an intruder's name to your
blocked list.
I'm not sure whether the latest WLMessenger release includes an
option to report the incident to Microsoft. I believe it should.
