I am having the same problem and am getting no help from the technical
assistance team about this, not even the courtesy of a reply other than the
automated "we'll get back to you within 24 business hours". The Critical
Updates seem to be the worst I've found for the SP2 Update, both the security
issue and issue with the XP Office update, but the GDI+ (I think this is it)
upload and the .NET 1.0 Framework and .NET 1.1 fixes aren't completing either
whether loaded as a bundle or individually. Driver upgrades for the RealTek
Audio, NVIDIA Audio aren't loading either. And forget that automatic
update...what a laugh. I used to get advised when I had updates to download.
Now, I get nothing but an occasional 2% downloaded and nothing more...Can we
get some techinical advice from the MS team...PLEASE!!! If not, any fellow
Microsoft victims out there who might have some idea of how to help,
please...and would be much appreciated.

There are a number of possibilities here - the most common is that your
Temporary Internet Files folder is corrupted - try this
Open Internet Properties (in Control Panel)
on the General tab, you'll see a Temporary Internet Files section - click on
the Delete Button, and then put a check in the 'delete offline content'
option, and click OK
wait a few minutes for the deletion to work, then click on the Settings
button.
Adjust the 'Amount of disk space to use' to around 40-60MB (any more is just
wasteful), click OK out, reboot, and try Windows Updates again. - this time
ONLY go for the System Restore update, if it's offered, other wise any of
the smaller download should do.

If that doesn't work, then check your Internet Properties Security and
Privacy settings -
set both Internet Security and Privacy settings to Default (if you have
IE5.5 installed still, then you may not have Privacy settings available).
then try again

Check your system for parasites/malware......
You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

Once that shows up clean, then try Windows Updates again.

If it still fails, then post back, and we'll work on it

I also had a problem with an apparent failure to respond by the
Microsoft technical assistance team. I subsequently discovered the
apparent lack of response was NOT their fault.

If you are using Hotmail or similar web-based email system, check the
junk mail settings. In my case, Hotmail had treated the responses
from Microsoft technical assistance as SPAM - and had promptly deleted
the emails

You can find out whether responses have gone astray by visiting
http://support.microsoft.com/.

Sign in, using the Microsoft Passport log-in that you used, when you
asked for assistance.

Then, click on the second option under "Assisted Support".

This will enable you to check your original question - and read any
responses.

......'my c drive will not read any discs'???
do you mean your CD drive won't read any CD's??
Try this
Boot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL CD drives
Remove ALL Hard drives
Remove ALL master IDE controllers
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Reboot to Normal Mode - windows will reinstall required drivers - see if
that helps your problem there.

Did the anti-virus scans show any results?

Unfortunately, the Device Manager can only go so far with diagnosis - it may
simply be that your lens on the CD is dirty, so try using a CD cleaner disc
(from your local record shop or computer store) and see if that helps.

If Stinger found a lot of stuff - did you update your AV and find more? -
which viruses were present??
