Something using CPU cycles

I'm using Win 2000, with latest updates, on a BioStar 8668-D motherboard
(with mfg drivers). I'v minimized processes and run anti-virus, Ad-Aware,
and SpyBot.

Yet, with no applications running, I'm using about 50% of my CPU cycles.
Task Manager, Performance shows only Idle Process using cycles. The result
is that my computer runs very slow, especially in opening folders and on the
Internet.

Any ideas?

Does any of the programs have a Real-Time Protection turned on?
How much RAM installed. What is the CPU?
