One computer that I am responsible for will not install 896358. I
previously hid it on the update page because it would download multiple
times and never install. I looked back and found many others with a similar
problem, but the indicated solutions required Regedit which is beyond my
capabilities.

Has there been a recent solution for relative newbie?

I wasn't clear. I want to avoid any editing of the registry. MS
recommended it in their Knowledge Base, but I am too paranoid to follow the
advice.

I very reluctantly allowed M.S. to use its Active X data collection tool on
my computer. They may send me advice through their "online assisted
support". So I sit with thumbs twiddled.

If I ever solve this problem I will probably then disable or remove the data
collection tool.
