I have had to format the hard drive of a friends computer and reinstall
Windows XP with service pack 1. After install we had no sound. Is this to do
with the Chipset settings? I understand that XP must be updated with service
pack 2 immediately after installation of XP and before any drivers are
loaded. How do you download SP2 without an internet connection?

NOrmally Windows XP will install all of the drivers to get it running even
the soud will be installed. When tou install PLEASE PLEASE don't tell me you
fell for that old let windows install for you, I always always do a custom
install to make sure that everything is installed. Later if there is
something you do not want or need you can remove it or do not select that
item to be installed the first time. Now when windows is finished installing
reboot the computer and get your Modem or Ethernet cards working. If your on
a diaql up follow the ISP directions to installing and setting up you
connections. If your on a Ethernet connections have windows set it up and
give windows the information you need to connect to the net you can always go
back later and setup your e-mail if it is connected to outlook or some other
e-mail program and it will not hurt if you want to set that up to since your
right there to setup the internet connection. Once completed do all the
windows the the drivers updates, Install all drivers after all updates from
microsoft have completed the go back and check with windows updates for any
other MFG (Manufactured) updates to the hardware you just installed. If your
running an SOundblaster sound card you may or may not have to install the
drivers if you stoll have no sound then determine the type of sound card you
have. If you have the drivers install those. follow the instructions exactly.
If you do not have the drivers determine the make and model of the sound card
and visit there web site and download the drivers from them, this is a good
way tho get the latest drivers while you are at it. Hope this helps.
