Sound Scheme Stops Working in Win XP

Hi,
My sound scheme has stopped working in Win XP. It seems to have done this
after I performed an automatic update. I am new to the Windows world, so I am
not sure what to do. I did try resetting the scheme, and I can indeed hear
the sample sounds, but even though I apply them or okay them, the computer is
silent.

I tried a system restore and the sound scheme did come back in an earlier
version of the system, but I lost my applications and e-mail settings and
kept going back and forth so much that I must have filled up the disk buffer
because Restore lost a lot of earlier dates and now that option won't work
for me. (I told you, I'm new to this!)

It could be an application I downloaded that is causing the problem
(QuickTime with Itunes??). It's not a virus (at least, Norton doesn't find
any viruses).

Any ideas?

Thanks. I really do like my Windows XP, and I'd love to hear it "sing" once
more.
