General rule [for most] is not to trust the update site to download the
latest drivers for hardware such as audo and video. Better off grabbing them
from the manufacturers site as you'll know what you're grabbing and it could
even be more current than the update site.

I had a machine with an older ATI card. Win XP didn't have the drivers built
in. I used the ATI site and got what I thought was the latest. Right after I
went to the update site and it told me there is something more recent. After
installing and rebooting, I ended up with a 16 color VGA screen. Not pretty.
:-)

You should be able to roll back the drivers via the Device Manager [Control
Panel -> System -> ...] as there may not be anything listed in the Add/Remove
for the current drivers. Grab the real drivers first. Rollback. Reboot and
the install the downloaded drivers.

Hi there,

Hopefully you did not take that driver from windows update?

Never take drivers from windows update unless they are intended for
Microsoft hardware.

If an updated driver is needed because the hardware does not work proper go
to the manufacturers website to look for an updatede driver.

If it ain't broke: do not try to"FIX" it.

If you did take the optional drivers from windows update try booting last
known good configuration, rolling back on the driver or system restore or
restore from the fullsystem backup you hopefully made.

here you can see how to roll back on a device driver:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...rrollback.mspx

You can disable the update appearing when automatic updates is set by going
to the windows update website and unmark (hide) driver in question.

Best regards,
Michel Denie
