I installed the C Media Electronics Incorporation - Sound - C-Media AC97
Audio Device update on my XP software, but then my sound completely
disappeared and my hardware said I had no audio device. I have tried
uninstalling it and reinstalling it, and also using the rollback for the
driver which has taken me to SiS AC'97 Audio Controller - SigmaTel Codec, but
I still have no sound, can anyone help me?

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Hardware tab, Device Manager.
Expand "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers". Click the AC'97 enrty once to highlight it, then
press the Delete key. Answer yes, shutdown and reboot the computer. Windows will find the
device on restart and will install the drivers for it. There will probably be two possibilities-
the old driver and the new one that didn't work. Make sure you select the old one. If you make
a mistake, just delete it again and start over.

If that fails to restore it, and you still have the CD with the drivers for the sound, use that
to install the drivers. (During the install, select the "Have CD" option)

Windows Update will offer the driver again once you fix things so just check the "Hide" box.

I had the same problem with this update. I went into Device Manager and
rolled back the driver and everything returned to normal. Just click
properties on the driver name and then rollback.

I'm afraid this didn't work, it recognised the hardware upon start up but I
still have no sound.

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Hardware tab, Device Manager.
Are there any problems showing for the sound? (Question, or exclamation marks?)

If not, while in the Control Panel, click "Sounds and Audio Devices", and check the box, "Place
volume icon on taskbar", click "Apply", "OK"

Double click the volume icon on taskbar, and make sure the volumes are all the way up and
nothing but the Mic is muted...

IN Sounds and Audio Device properties it says there is no audio device, after
restarting, I updated the drivers again and the C-Media one was re-installed
and there is an exclamation next to this, the properties say the device
cannot start (Code 10)

Updated from where?? Windows Update? Supply more info when you reply.

Do this...
Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Hardware tab, Device Manager.
Expand "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" and double-click the AC'97 enrty.
Click the "Driver" tab, click the "Update Driver" button. That brings up the Update Wizard.
Check the box, "Install from a list or spacific loaction (Advanced), click "Next"
Check the box, "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install", click "Next"
Check the box, "Show compatable Hardware"
There should be TWO possibilities there:

AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)
AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller. (This one is probably highlighted already)

Select the AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM and "Next" your way out of the Update Wizard, reboot.
If it's not named that, pick ANYTHING but the "AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller". That's the one
that caused all the problems to start with.

Now, if that doesn't fix the problem, you'll need the CD that came with the sound card. (If the
sound is built into the motherboard, you'll need the CD that came with the motherboard)
Repeat the above exactly to the point where there were 2 choices and instead of picking one of
them, click the button, "Have Disk" and follow the prompts...

I updated it previously using the Update Driver in the Driver Tab and it
conncted to Windows Update.

I just tried this and when I got to the choice of two they both said the
same thing SiS AC'97 Audio Controller.

I don't have a disk, the sound is built into the motherboard and there was
not disk for Windows when I bought the pc, I bought it from a high street
retailer and everything was already installed.

SiS and C-Media are two different manufacturers!

Download "ChipInfo", save to a folder, unzip, and run it.
Click on the "Audio" tab, and post back with the Manufacturer and the Device Description.
