Never did understand why anything microsoft does takes so long. I did the 65
mb SP 1 download this morning and it took an unbelievable amount of time to
download, install, configure. I downloaded UBUNTU, 700+mb's, installed and
was up and running in half the time. Don't get me wrong, I am a Windows
person, absolutely love Vista. I have XP on my other computer and will
upgrade soon to Vista. UBUNTU is just a curiosity thing and I have no
intention of making it my primary. Just wondering why it takes so long.

about an hour is what people report but have in mind that it depends on how
many programs you have installed too

I used the full download (430 MB).
To install SP1 it took 42 minutes on my desktop, 80 minutes on my wife's
laptop.

Yes it's about 430 megs and even on my fairly slow (economy) DSL connection
it just took an hour or so.
Considering the huge number of folks who must be downloading it...
that was pretty fast

It was 65 megs over here too, but it was the ***longest*** 65 megs that
I think I've ever experienced. : ) Windows Update didn't show the
actual download bitrate, but I'm guessing that it was a fraction of what
would normally be received.

One of the major reasons why installing SP1 takes a little long to install
is because the Windows Vista kernel is updated to bring the Vista kernel
(version 6.0) up to date with the version in Windows Server 2008 (version 6.1).

when you mean "download" you mean from within windows update..
yeah.. then its smaller
Usualy the term is called "update", while "download" means downloading a
seperate file on your pc

I was talking about the full download as a file from the microsoft site that
is 434.5 MB and has 5 languages inside

this one
Got to

I fully realize this, as I've also downloaded the standalone 430+
megabyte version...but I allowed Windows Update to download/install only
the necessary files the other evening. Seriously--the 430+ meg download,
attempted later, went almost as quickly as the 65 meg download from
Windows Update...and I'm just talking download time, not the the time it
took to install the service pack.
