Has anyone installed SP-2 from the CD furnished by Microsoft? Mine arrived
in the mail yesterday-still very reluctant to attempt installation after
reading the multitude of problems listed earlier.

Read and print this first:

Make sure you do a back up, preferably a clone. For that, check out
http://www.acronis.com They have a 30 trial period.

I installed SP2 (10-12 days ago) from the download available for Network
Administrators which should be the same as the CD [I received my CD in the
mail wednesday]. No significant problems other than the normal learning
process common to such extensive program security upgrades.

Yep. SP2 installed from CD and XP is working with no problems at all.

I downloaded the network version and installed SP2 without a hitch when it
first became available. It's on 5 desktops and a laptop and functioning
without issue.

Be aware that:

1) "The U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team (US-CERT), the
federally-funded security clearinghouse and alert center, put its two cents
in this week and recommended that every Windows XP user install the Service
Pack 2 update...."
US-CERT Urges All To Install XP SP2 2004-09-02
http://www.internetweek.com/breaking...cleID=46200889

2) I read that future updates would be built on the assumption that SP2 had
been installed.

I received my CD in a little over a week. I just installed it, and it
took about one-half hour. I declined the automatic updates, firewall and
antivirus, because I have my favorites. And I like to do my own updates.

I was surprised that it took so little time to install. I guess I have
it because the system shows it is installed. No problems, so far.

This is my 3rd attempt. My previous messages sent have not appeared.

2) info is incorrect. Torgeir corrected me in a response to a similar
message at 2127GMT. SP1 will be supported till at least August, 2006.
