SP 3 install

After several attempts installing SP 3, the final attempt crashed my HP
Laptop. (Pavillon ze2000, AMD Mobile Sempron). At boot the system says my
C:\windows\system32\system file is missing or corrubted.
Any thoughts?

That is a registry hive. There is a Help & Support article which describes
how to recover from this event; however, it may not work for an OEM
installation.
A good way to recover is restoration of a system state backup. Another way
to recover is through use of a restore point as described in "Microsoft
Registry Guide" by Jerry Hunnicutt".
Yet another way is by restoring the computer from either the on disk
recovery partition or by reinstalling XP from CDs.

In any case, you are in for a lot of work.
