When I try to install updates it passes the initialization process but it
then says failed. There is no error message but when I click on view history
it says error code F01F. Thanks

Hi;

Are you logged in with an account that has Administrator privileges? Not
sure, but guessing this is a Permissions problem.

Hi;

Checking that depends a bit on your system.

What version of Windows are you using? Are you the only user on that
system?

Is this a stand-alone desktop system, a laptop, or a computer hooked into a
network?

It is a stand alone desktop. I am the only user and it is windows xp. I had
installed previous updates but then I installed some spyware removal tools
such as spywareblaster, and spybot. I don't know if this is causing the
failures. Thanks

OK, to verify that your account is a member of the Administrators group,
open Control Panel/User Accounts. You should see your name there, and
underneath should be "Computer Administrator"

Since you are the only user, I'm guessing that you already have the Admin
privileges. If this is XP Pro, open Control Panel/Administrative
Tools/Computer Management. In the left pane, click the "+" by Local Users
and Groups to expand it, then select Groups. Double click Guests in the
resulting right pane. You should see just one entry there: Guest. If you
see your name there (or any other name) highlight that name and click
Remove. In other words, you Do Not want to be part of the Guests group,
since that can cause authentication issues in several places.

Note that if you are using XP Home you probably won't be able to perform the
actions in that last paragraph. Be sure to post back with that info.

So, now back to the problem with installing that update. Since you state
you have been able to install previous updates, time to take a closer look
at the one the failed. Which update was it (the KBxxxxxxxx number)? I
know you reported an error of "F01F" but wasn't there more to it than that?
Most of those error numbers are 8 characters. Can you try the update again
and write down the exact error message and the full error number and post
back with that info? That would probably help a lot in tracking down the
problem.

I use xp home. This is what it says after it is finished.
The following updates failed to be installed successfully:

Security Update for Windows XP (KB828741)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB834707)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB840987)

Error: There is not enough disk space to install the update(s). Free
additional space on your hard disk and then try again.

Ok. I just noticed it said that I don't have enough space. I ran disk
cleanup and tried again and it still didn't work. What should I try next?
Thanks

How much free space do you have? What size is your drive? Do you have
more than one drive/partition on your computer? Open My Computer, select to
View/Details, and look under Hard Disk Drives for Total Size and Free Space
for each of your drives/partitions. Please post back with the drive letter
for each hard drive listed, the total/free space for each. From there we
can work on either giving Windows more space, or deciding if that error is a
mistake being caused by something else.

I know, this is taking longer than you would like, but we are making
progress.

I'm not concerned with how long it's taking, I'm just glad you are helping
me. My hard drive C: has 37.2 GB and 29.0 GB free space. That is the
only hard drive.
Looks like something else is causing the problem.

I agree. Let's work on cleaning things up.

1. Locate the WUTemp folder (it is a Hidden folder, so you will need to
enable that option under the Folder Options). Delete that folder and all
contents.

2. At the Start/Run line type in: net stop wuauserv (there will be a window
that opens and closes after a few seconds)

3. Open Windows\SoftwareDistribution. Delete both the Datastore and
Download folders.

4. At the Start/Run line type in: net start wuauserv (there will be another
short windows open/close event)

5. Locate your default Temp folder (usually ".:\Documents and Settings\<user
name>\Local Settings\Temp" and delete or Move everything out of there. If
you have a default TMP folder, clean it out also. You may not have one of
those. I know, CleanUp should have emptied that already, but best to check
anyway.

6. With all instances of IE closed, open Control Panel/Internet Options. On
the General tab select to Delete Files under the Temporary Internet Files
section; when the window pops up, mark the option to delete Offline content.

7. Last one. Open My Computer, right-click your C: drive and select
Properties. Then click the Tools tab; select the option to Check Now...;
don't mark any of the options, just click Start.

When that is all done, Restart your computer and open IE. Click
Tools/Windows Update and then do a Custom Install scan. When done, go to
the Review High Priority updates and Remove all but one of them. Then
proceed to download/install that one. If it succeeds then repeat the
process for the next one, and so forth until they have all been installed.
Naturally, if you get the same or a different error on any one of those,
copy down that info and post back with it.

Good luck!
