SP1 and it still can't remember Explorer settings

I just don't believe it. I have installed SP1 on my Ultimate x64 machine
expecting big things only to find that it *still* can't remember Explorer
settings like the dimensions of the Explorer window or whether I prefer
icons or details.

What a joke.

That should be a clue that your problem is caused by something other than
Vista.
What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems.

You can try this...

Open START menu|RUN and type "regedit" (no quotes) <enter>

Use EDIT|FIND to locate...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell

In the right-hand pane right-click on bagMRU size and modify the decimal
value to 20000.

Vista has been the epitome of a user friendly approach gone user vicious in a
heartbeat. If MS spent a fraction of resources on QA as they do on marketing,
Vista may have had a chance, however, I am finding very few repairs in SP1
with lost productivity becoming the norm. I find Vista seems to like running
1 window only since it loses itself between windows quit often!!!

Thanks for the suggestion but sadly it didn't help.

I have now upgraded 2 completely different machine types to SP1 and neither
one can properly remember Explorer settings. If, for example, I widen the
Explorer window to accommodate all fields in one particular view and then
close it, it reopens at its old width. This is even with click,
shift-click, ctrl-click, ctrl-shift-click on the close button. It *does*
remember most view settings but simply cannot be relied upon to always
restore using the previous dimensions and settings.

That is quite pathetic. I mean how hard can it be to persist a few folder
settings??? Forget about complex gradients and other special GUI effects
and give me some reliable basic functionality!

It might be a security program blocking the Registry change it needs to
make. A few, but not all, of the programs now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
IBM Access Connections
Kaspersky
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Spyware Doctor
Windows Defender
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 or Norton 2007 it actually has to be
uninstalled. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you
reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try the change.

I am using Kaspersky but I have turned off the registry guard and the
problem still happens.

??? Microsoft's own product prevents Windows from working properly???
