sp1 didn't take....

      03-18-2008
after an hour and half [and counting] it says it didn't install and is
reverting changes.
bugger... i was really hoping this service pack would fix some of the
performance issues....

not sure what the problem is, but perhaps it is the audigy.....
would that actually block the entire service pack from installing?

Was this update installed prior to the attempt to install SP1 ? -

Description of the CheckSUR update for Windows Vista and for Windows
Vista for x64-based systems

If not, *strongly* advise you to download, save, and install it from the
links on the above page.
For further assistance in getting SP1 installed it may be best if you

well, i guess it would.
and i notice that the logitech webcam i have is screwing things up as
well.

i don't think CL has any intentions of updating those drivers, so my
option is probably to buy a new sound card.
as for the logitech, i guess i'll have to wait until everyone is
playing nice with each other. sigh....
i was really hoping the service pack was gonna give me some boost from
this OS....
now i have no idea how long before logitech will decide to fix the
issue.

I installed the stand alone SP1 on my system (32-bit) with an Audigy 2 ZS
without issue (with Creative's year old drivers - thanks Creative).

ok, well, that makes me a little more hopeful...
mine is an Audigy SE.. which i just noticed isn't working either..
well, i've got no sound, the vista computer is still booting up so i'm
not sure yet what the problem is, whether it got disabled or the sound
scheme was turned off, or what....

there is still the logitech issue, which as i reread the message from
MS, sounds like something MS is working on, not logitech...

as for the other update, i'm not sure if it was installed or not, but
i had been to WU and it said i was up to date, so i'm guessing it had
been.
is it more likely that it wasn't installed?

his event viewer log was not starting and this stopped the
installation.

to tell the truth, even though he gives step by step instructions how
to fix it, it looks daunting to me.
but i have known for sometime now that my event log was not working.

this happened just after i had upgraded to Ultimate, and had some
issues with permissions.
the techs at microsoft india did some things and after that the event
viewer had not been working. i'm guessing something they did reset
this, so i'm going to try and follow the directions and hope that it
doesn't all go south on me.

i need some help...
this may be a completely idiotic question, but here is the copied
instructions for what i am supposed to type at the command prompt...

"4. When this command file completes, you then need to open a command
window (using Run As Administrator) and run the following command;

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /
verbose >c:\temp\secedit_output.txt (the redirect of output echos the
programs output to a text file, but secedit also creates a log file.
The program will show you the location of the log file when it is
done).

These two actions combined will reset the permissions on the registry
nodes back to their default settings."

i type EXACTLY that and it simply says "the system cannot find the
path specified"
is the %windir% supposed to actually be something else? like c:windows
maybe?

had a little more time to sort through this, and having checked the
drivers that are supposedly a problem,
"For x86-based and x64-based computers: Ctaud2k.sys - version
6.0.1.1242 or earlier
For x86-based computers: P17.sys - all versions (This was originally a
Windows XP-based driver.) "

my card definately uses the P17.sys though not the Ctaud2k.sys

just wondering where the block on my installation was occuring, so did
your particular card use these drivers?
if not perhaps that is why you able to install without issue.

Go here, download the full standalone install;
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Boot into Safe Mode (F8) and start the install from there.

I've used this method on three different Vista machines,
two desktops and one laptop..... it has worked flawlessly.
