SP1 disaster on 64bit machine

Download & install appeared to proceed normally until install demanded
reboot. Killed my PC. Black screen with fluttering message:
!! 0xc0000034 !! 292/123122 (_0000000000000000.cdf-ms)

Message static for 2 hours, drivelight blinks 1/sec, keyboard/mouse
unresponsive. Forced restart. Identical BSOD/msg. Reforced, starting in
SafeMode. Loads a long list of drivers but stops dead after:
Loaded: ....etc.... CRCDISK.SYS
(drive light blinks 1/sec)

Now what? PC is OEM installed Vista Ultimate, no Vista CDROM, comes with
the typical disaster-recovery disk, which sounds like big trouble.
