SP1 Doesn't Install

I got the Windows Download Notifications email on March 21 - announcing SP1
general availability. I followed the directions to download SP1 for a single
PC. Windows Update tells me "Windows is up to date, there are no updates
available for your computer". Checked to be sure automatic updates had not
installed SP1 - nope, not there. Checked all the pre-reqs listed in the KB
articles - found none that applied to my computer. PC is a Dell laptop, new
in July with Vista preinstalled. Each time I go to Windows Update - nothing!

QUESTION: If Microsoft/Windows can scan my PC to determine if it is ready
for SP1 and they find an issue - why can't they give me a list of items that
are incompatible so I can find them and get them fixed??? Does anybody know
of a standalone program that will scan for all the incompatibilities
(drivers, etc.) that keep SP1 from installing?

correct.

This is not specific to your question, but may help.

I've had problems installing SP1, and have spent a good while tring to find
a solution. A good place to start is as follows (you might have already
checked/completed this, but just in case - )

I also came across a discussion which related to McAfee - suggestion was to
uninstall McAfee products and retry the SP1 install, this worked a treat, SP1
installed in less than 30 minutes. If you need to do this, then download
SP1, and make sure you save it to your PC, don't run it, so that when you
uninstall Mcafee, and become unprotected, you don't need a web conection.

Since your computer is relatively new, please go to the Dell site. Update
all drivers that are newer from there. Update BIOS, if newer version
available for your machine.

Download SP1 Standalone (Approximately 432 megs) to hard drive.

Disconnect from internet and shut off Norton/McAfee/whatever you have.

Now, here's a prior message I posted some time ago. It worked flawlessly
for me; it should for you.
Print it, and then read thoroughly, before attempting the SP1 install.

The following is what I wrote:

In the left hand pane of the Windows Update screen there is an option
"Restore Hidden Updates".
Check there to be sure you did not inadvertently 'hide' a previous update
that is needed to make SP1 available to your system.

I have a Dell E510 with Sigmatel Audio and I went crazy for several days
reconfiguring many times figuring this was the cause (as stated in
Microsoft's KB article) as to why SP1 was not available to me. I had ignored
to 'OPTIONAL' updates that were showing as the KB Article states that
'Important and Recommended' are the only updates that should be needed.

Turned out it was an older optional update (Bitlocker and EFS Enhancements)
that was causing SP1 not to show in my available updates. Once I installed
that, SP1 became available and installed no problems. In fact I have seen
noticeable improvement in system performance and Vista now reports all 4GB
of my installed RAM (previously it only recognized 3GB).

I too have a Dell with SP1 issues. If you cannot see the update, it may be bacause of a driver issue. Mine was a Sound card and Wireless Card issue. The sound card driver fix was here:

The Intel wireless card driver I removed and got the latest one from Dell, then went and got the service pack.

Apparently SP1 is not made available to you at all if it suspects a driver issue and the problem is no one is telling anybody about it.
