SP1 install question

I have had the common problem on not being able to install KB938371 update
which is one of the 3 prerequisites to downloading through Microsoft Update
the SP1. I have tried all the tricks and suggestion published throughout
the web except an in place reinstall of Vista Business. This is highly
undesireable since my sony laptop will only reinstall Vista Business as per
original with all the software originally shipped which is a pain to remove.

If I download the entire sp1 750mb file, will it install without the
prerequsite files? I have read that the prerequisites were actually a
compilation of sp1 files and not an actual update to Vista. This being the
case, it seems that if the sp1 file were downloaded it would work. Any
suggestions or comments for a workaround would be appreciated.

My understanding is that the full download of SP1 contains everything to go
from Vista RTM to SP1.

First, it's not 750mb, it's a little over 300mb.

And yes, it will.

I belive the full download has the prerequisites built-in and will
install them if needed. If it is unable to install them, the SP1 update
will probably be aborted.

Thanks for all the comments. Doesn't seem like I have much to lose to try
the whole download. I've been messing with this for weeks. However, I'll be
sure to keep my Acronis disc images current just in case of Murphy's Law.
And 300mb is a lot nicer than 750! mikeS

I do have an Acronis Disk Image just in case)

Did it work? I'm in the same position (i.e. cannot install KB938371) and I
have the official MS SP1 disk but daren't use it because of having been told
that KB938371 is a prerequisite. Is it true it is not a prerequisite if one
has the SP1 disk?

Sorry to seem dense, but was that a 'yes' or a 'no'? I've already been
through all the MS help procedures and even Support has given up trying to
work out why I cannot install KB938371 so I just have to live with it. What I
need to know is whether the MS SP1 disk will work without KB938371 or will it
just fail, or will it screw up my computer?

Thanks for your patience.

First, I don't have SP1, because I don't want it. Meaning I do not hav
1st hand experience installing SP1
However, according to Paul, Nonny and Andrew, you are a-ok to go
