SP1 installation failed: 80070005

ok, i've been through the ringer on this...
i've tried three times with the standalone SP and once through Windows
Update to install this service pack and it keeps failing with the same
error.

Ive researched what i could and there were a few suggestions:
the windows modules installer service was listed once in a forum as a
possible culprit, and when i checked mine it was indeed disabled. so i
started it [run as admin] and then set it to automatic. but when i
opened it up again today it was reset to manual and turned off.. not
sure if perhaps the failed installation reset it...

i also removed all offending drivers and then cleared them from the
system folder.

i've gone through the steps listed on the ms site and run memory, disk
and system file scans.
the system file check mentioned some possible errors and tells me to
check in the CBS.log but i can't open this file... it says access
denied.

not sure what else to try here, but i can't seem to get past this
error.

any ideas?

For what it's worth, here's a prior message I posted some time ago:


I ran into the same problem attempting to update my son's computer running
Vista. A resolution was offered in Windows Vista General Forum. I followed
that person's advice, and it worked like a charm.

Check out MowGreen's direction to follow Microsoft's
revelations/recommendations in the link he provided. Make certain all your
drivers are up to date, and everything that's important to you on your hard
drive is backed up. Take the time to make an image of your hard drive, just
in case. Then try what "e" suggests.
