I have Vista 32 Ultimate on a multi-boot machine (one partition has
Ubuntu on it if that is of any possible significance). WU still does
not offer SP1. None of the famous eight causes identified by Microsoft
at

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343

applies (I do have Sigma-Tel audio drivers but just updated them to
the most recent ones from the Intel site). I also have a Logitech
QuickCam on the system—but not one that uses the driver that has been
identified as problematic with Vista SP1.

I have read in various places that, for a variety of reasons, it is
not a wise idea to use the standalone installation. What else might
be keeping WU from offering SP1?

If your computer is running fine you probably shouldn't rush SP1. It could
cause problems. If you are willing to risk a stable setup then there is no
reason not to download the standalone installer.

I had this same problem until I disconnected all my USB devices except mouse
and keyboard.

If SP1 is not available at Windows Update you probably have an incompatible
driver.
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows
Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
