bottom right had corner of my destop I have some white type saying Windows Vista (TM)
Evaluation copy, Build 6001
Why is is here and how do I get rid of it?

This is what happens when you apply beta or pre-release software to your
computer. You will need to either uninstall the beta version prior to
installing the final version or possibly re-format and re-install Vista if
you cannot otherwise uninstall the pre-release version of SP1 that you have
installed.

You get rid of that by installing the RTM version after uninstalling the RC1
version.

That is expected since you have installed the Beta of SP-1.
There is also a time bomb that will prevent use after a period of
time.
Assuming you got SP-1 from a legitimate source, all this and more
information was there and in the license you agreed.

To get rid of that, uninstall SP-1.

If you are not intending to use your computer for testing prerelease
software uninstall it now.

Beta has inherent risks and is not intended to be installed on
production computers.

Are you prepared for total data loss?
Are you prepared to perform a Clean Installation of Windows to resolve
any and all issues?
If no to any of the above, you are not prepared for Beta software.
While the above possibilities are rare, they are possible and part of
the expected nature of Beta software.
This applies to Beta anything from any source, not just Microsoft.

No you didn't. It hasn't been released yet. You installed a beta
version of it, perhaps RC1.

Because, as I said, you are running a beta version, which *is* an
evaluation copy.

> and how do I get rid of it?

You can't--not with the version you are running.

In my view, it is foolhardy to run a beta version of an operating
system unless you have a spare machine to try it on, are someone who
enjoys playing with whatever is newest, and wouldn't mind if you lost
everything on your computer.

Most who install this Beta test software will be better off with the
message.
Without the message, some will mistakenly believe they have the final
release which is obviously not the case for now since it has not been
released.
This has happened before and I suppose it will again with several
months between now and the release for the important details to be
forgotten.

As for that article, part is not very valid.
I would question the wisdom of someone having Beta software on the
same laptop used for important presentations, so that reason is not
really valid.
Beta software just does not belong on most production computers.

Thanks all. This laptop is for my personal use and is backed up regularly so there is little
danger of losing anything but a good chunk of my time. Vista has been rock solid for me so I
wanted to see if the SP addressed some of the slow file copying issues I was having. Seems a
bit better, but robocopy from the command line still rules.
P.S. When the final SP is released will I have to do a complete uninstall of the RC?
thanks

You should uninstall the Beta before attempting to install the final
release.

You can not install SP1 RTM unless the RC is uninstalled.
