On a computer running XP Pro SP1 that's been updated to SP2, can I run a
repair from the SP1 OS cd? Should I unistall SP2 before attempting the
repair? Or how about running the Recovery Console that was installed with the
original XP installation?

Hello,

I'd ask you to provide a bit of detail as to whether you have an immediate need to do a repair-install or use the Recovery Console.
If it is not immediate --- meaning this system is running & usable--- I'd suggest you make (and have safely stored) a "slipstream CD".
That can be used for repair or to run the Recovery Console.

Providing you have a regular XP CD that has your XP ( as opposed to just having a "recovery CD" from a manufacturer or pc vendor), then you can "merge" your original XP with the latest service pack ( at this stardate, it is SP 2) into a *slipstream* CD.

Here is one good reference
Windows 2000/XP SP Slipstreaming by Daniel Petri
http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2000_...pstreaming.htm

The examples are for Win2000, as well as Win XP.

No, you do not uninstall SP2 to do a repair.

I've always installed SP2 from the Microsoft cd and never had one problem so I never looked deeper into SP2 issues. As far as Windows cds go, what I have are "reinstallation" cds provided by Dell with the purchase of their computers. And yes, I have a friends computer that went down after the latest Windows updates. I suspect a virus or viruses. I think the update business may be a coincidence in this case. The computer is showing an error screen about missing Windows files. I thought I'd try a couple different aproaches before wiping the drive and doing a clean install. These people are typical of so many who won't pay attention to security and general system maintenance. issues
